Book Review: Halfway to the Grave (Night Huntress #1)

5/5

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Synopsis: Catherine “Cat” Crawfield is a half-vampire with a vendetta. Her goal is to take out as many vampires as possible, as a form of payback to the undead deadbeat that assaulted her mother, leaving her knocked up and unwed in a small town where such things are highly frowned upon. Like many young women her age, Cat spends her Friday night’s out at the bar. But instead of taking the guys she meets home, she puts a stake in them. Everything is going according to plan for Cat, until she tries to take on Bones, a white-haired english bounty hunting vampire who happens to be super old and super strong. Bones has a proposition for her, he’ll train her to be deadly, and she’ll help him capture his vampire bounty. Cat reluctantly accepts, but soon their relationship grows into something that Cat could have never seen coming.

This was my second time reading this book, though I’m pretty sure its been close to a decade since my first pass (I’m so old yikes!). I enjoyed the read, though it was longer than I remembered, and I have to admit to getting bored quite a bit in the beginning. I frequently put the book down and then went back to it to get through the first quarter. The writing itself starts off stilted with too much trope (enter young and sarcastic but insanely beautiful heroine). I found the main character, Cat, to be annoying and her main way of speaking and thinking was through heavy use of snark. It really turned me off and made her character unlikeable. However, Jeaniene Frost seemed to find her groove once the initial introductions were out of the way. The second half of the book was interesting and heavily action packed. I really enjoyed the more tender moments between Cat and Bones. Which leads me to the steam, there was some goooooood steam. In fact, I could have used quite a bit more of those very sexy scenes. Also, the author did a great job of writing Bone’s dialogue. Did anyone else picture Spike from Buffy? Am I dating myself some more? That has to have been her inspiration for the character, with a bit of Captain Jack Sparrow. This is definitely a must read series and is the perfect example of an adult paranormal romance series. I’m looking forward to rereading book number two.
